Whilst it is possible to edit FranLitt without holding a user account, we strongly recommend that all new users create an account. This ensures that you are given due credit for your work on the site and helps you keep track of your contributions.

To create an account, click on the button in the top right corner labelled 'Create account'. You will be asked to choose a username and password, as well as enter an email address. Creating an account is free, and your account will also be valid on all other wikis using the Miraheze system.

If you already have a Miraheze account, you do not need to create a new one, you can simply sign in with your existing account.

Edits made by people not signed in to an account will be recorded under their IP address.

Made of pinewood clumsily painted in black,{{refn|Could also refer to certain types of wood, not clear from source text (Translator)}} its lid pierced with two wire-mesh openings, this box seemed like it could be for a funeral. Gladly, one could take it for a small coffin designed for a child, or for a worn-out automobile bonnet, or even for one of those appalling boxes Japanese farmers use to send their peonies around Europe.

Fascinated by this strange box, I thought about what it could really contain, and I began really to resemble this farmer that, having received a letter by chance, considers it with terror, turns it over, turns it back, weighs it in his hand, shows it to all his neighbours, and cries "Here! Here! Who has sent me a letter? Ah! Good Lord, what is in this letter?" and decides not to open it.

Me, as well, I could not decide whether to open the box, to see what was inside. 

The address included the words 'Living dog'. But, other than my name and my address, it did not include anything except the name and address of the English parcel company who sent it. Nothing else. Nothing else but diagonal rows of data; arithmetic operations here and there, which I have never understood any of. And then everything was paid...

Everything was definitely paid; that was what appeared most bizarre to me. Who did this dog come to me from? And why a dog, a dog that the sender has insisted on calling living? What nonsense! 

Lifting my arms into the sky, I suddenly began to cry;

"There is no other explanation left, good Lord, than to say that this dog is a dead dog..."

I was intrigued, a bit annoyed... After all, I did not order a dog from anyone, I was not waiting for anyone, I did not want anyone.

'If I were to find in this box, instead of a living dog, pieces of a human body?' 

My imagination was taking me to whole new places. Pieces of a human body!

I shivered at the thought of flesh and also because it seemed like a good idea to shiver. But, immediately pushing back this unromantic and unfriendly idea, I finished by not fearing anything worse than one of these gruesome hoaxes, performed at the hands of, after drinking, some inventive and lugubrious English people... comedians, one might say.

I am horrified by hoaxes and I lack the spirit that one must have to laugh at them. I therefore prepared myself to refuse the package fully and the living or dead thing that it contained, when Vincent Péqueux, or The Willy, returned from the kitchen mockingly, where, to satisfy his gaiety, he had gone to drink his habitual glass of white wine. 

"Sir," he called out, "you know? I will save a bit for you."

And, laughing, he dried his moustache using the leather on the back of his sleeve. Despite this polite gesture, the atmosphere all around him was impregnated with a strong smell of garlic and alcohol. 

I did not want to force this trickster to be a witness to my hesitations for any longer. Without having checked the contents of the box, I wrote my signature on the document, and gave it back to him. He said approvingly;

"Good... Good!... Regarding your chickens, don't worry too much... One day or another, you will have them... They have been tucked away, in the shade, on the platform... They are watching the trains go by, like walkers on a Sunday... It is distracting them a bit, am I right? Say so, Sir... my little tip, please?

I gave him a few coins...

"That's fine... that's fine... don't worry too much, I'm off."

He left and, quickly, I unscrewed the lid of the box. I was not very reassured. The tools were trembling in my hand.

Soon, I noticed, lying quietly on a bed of grass, a sort of weak, fawn-coloured ball, which was a very young dog, or more a very small ''puppy'', so young, so small, that it did not appear to have the necessary force to hold itself on its paws. I took it to its dungeon... God! How it was grotesque to look at!

Imagine the face of an old public servant...&lt;ref&gt;'Source text includes 'tenez, d'employé aux contributions... - untranslatable? (Translator)&lt;/ref&gt; all wrinkled with bad temper, a head that is much too large, much too heavy for its body; a body vaguely knocked together; eyes barely open, barely visible in the cracks of its puffed up eyelids. In its pink belly, full, smooth, spotted red, the cut remains of an umbilical cord wiggled like a worm. A nuddy dog, if I can dare to express it in that way. I was furious.
